My love/hate relationship with My Yahoo! pages

July 17th, 2008 by Joe

I have dozens of feeds I’ve segregated by page using My Yahoo!. The one thing that keeps me using My Yahoo! is that I can filter each feed to show me only content that is X days fresh. I prefer 2 days as a norm. As a result I end up with only recent content on what are still very heavily laden industry dashboards. I love that I can do that with My Yahoo! and have not found this ability anywhere else (except if I made a Y! Pipe for every feed and manually applied a filter but who has the time?).

What I hate is My Yahoo!’s inability to recognize so many feeds, sometimes even those produced by Yahoo! properties. Either it outright refuses the feed proclaiming it not a valid feed or it just stops pulling content. For example, a friend has a blog. I was recently approach by another friend who was ranting about how funny some on this blog was. I was out of the know. I checked my My Yahoo! page containing friends’ blogs and saw there hadn’t been anything new on that feed for months. Thinking the feed had been changed, I resubscribed. In the process I saw there was lots of new content but guess what? My Yahoo! didn’t see anything for the past few months. I loaded the feed address into iGoogle, Netvibes, even the IE7 RSS reader and they all saw the recent content.

My other hate comes from the lag between when the content appears online and the time I get to see it on my dashboards. Maybe I’m asking a lot but six hours? Really?

Am I missing out on other good RSS aggregators? I’ve tried Bloglines and Google Reader. I’m not keen on the one-up list format. I love the panel layout that gives me more of an at-a-glance view.
